MONARCHS FROM EAST AND WEST FLY DIFFERENTLY, BUT STILL MATE

Although eastern and western queen butterflies fly in a different way, they are genetically the same, a brand-new study shows.

Each year, countless queen butterflies move throughout eastern North America to fly from as much north as the US-Canadian boundary to overwinter in main Mexico—covering as long as 3,000 miles.

On the other hand, beyond of the Rough Hills, western monarchs typically fly 300 miles to the Pacific Coast to invest the winter in California. Scientists lengthy thought that the eastern and western monarchs were genetically unique populaces.

The new study in Molecular Ecology, however, upends that idea.

"It was unexpected," says Jaap de Roode, teacher of biology at Emory College, whose laboratory is among a handful on the planet that studies queen butterflies.

"You would certainly anticipate that microorganisms with various habits and ecologies would certainly show some hereditary distinctions," de Roode says. "But we found that you cannot differentiate genetically in between the western and eastern butterflies."

20 MILLION DNA MUTATIONS

The present paper improves previous work from the de Roode laboratory that found resemblances in between 11 hereditary pens of the eastern and western monarchs, as well as more limited hereditary studies by others, and observational and monitoring information.

"This is the first genome-wide contrast of eastern and western monarchs to attempt to understand their behavior distinctions better," says first writer Venkat Talla, a postdoctoral other in the laboratory.

Talla evaluated greater than 20 million DNA mutations in 43 queen genomes and found no proof for genomic differentiation in between eastern and western monarchs. Rather, he found similar degrees of hereditary variety.

"Our work shows that the eastern and western monarchs are breeding with each other and trading hereditary material to a a lot greater degree compared to was formerly recognized," Talla says. "And it contributes to the proof that it's most likely distinctions in their atmospheres that forms the distinctions in their patterns of movement."
